ROMANTICISM (1800-1870ish): A literary and cultural
movement that emerged in response to the “Age of Reason” (1700-1770). A highly emotional period, writers
embraced intuition and the individual spirit and paid particular
respect to nature, the common man, and the past.
MAJOR ELEMENTS:
Imagination
Individuality
Nature as a Source of Spirituality
Wisdom Gained from the Past
Common Man as Hero
SUB-MOVEMENTS:
Gothicism--essentially the marriage of horror and love; gothic works focused on the darker side of humanity and often included tales of death, darkness, monstrosity, and madness.
Transcendentalism--the belief that people and nature were inherently good; focused on the interconnection between the natural world and the human spirit.
